Remember the first time you stumbled upon the word "permaculture"? For me, it felt like unlocking a secret code to a world of sustainable living, fostering a deep connection with nature and community. But where do you even begin, especially if you're new to all this and surrounded by conventional manicured lawns? Well, I got you! Permaculture Week, happening from March 15th to 24th this year, is the perfect opportunity to dive headfirst into the world of sustainable practices, and the best part? You can do it right in your own backyard – or someone else's!
This week-long celebration is all about embracing the principles of permaculture – mimicking nature's wisdom to create resilient and self-sustaining systems. It's a chance to learn, connect, and empower ourselves and our communities to live more harmoniously with the environment. But how do you, someone who might be new to the concept, get involved and encourage others to join in the fun?
How to do Permaculture Week?
The beauty of Permaculture Week lies in its accessibility. Here are some ways you can participate and inspire your community, no matter your experience level:
1. Explore Open Homes and Gardens
Many passionate individuals across Australia will be opening their homes and gardens to the public during the week. This is a fantastic opportunity to witness permaculture principles in action. Wander through thriving vegetable patches, see how rainwater harvesting works firsthand, and pick the brains of experienced practitioners. Don't be shy to ask questions, share your own interests, and get inspired by the diverse ways people are embracing sustainability in their own spaces.
2. Participate in Workshops and Events
Permaculture Week boasts a plethora of workshops and events across the country, catering to various interests and skill levels. From beginner-friendly composting and seed saving sessions to in-depth discussions on soil health and water systems, there's something for everyone. Attending these events allows you to learn from seasoned experts, gain practical skills, and connect with like-minded individuals.
3. Organise a Community Garden Clean-up
Gather your neighbours, grab some gloves and gardening tools, and organize a clean-up session in your local community garden. This is a fantastic way to give back, connect with your local community, and promote the importance of sustainable practices (don’t forget to ask permission before heading in!). You could even use the opportunity to share information about permaculture with your neighbours, sparking their curiosity and encouraging them to learn more.
4. Host a Permaculture Movie Night
Transform your living room into a mini-educational hub! Gather your friends and family for a movie night featuring documentaries or films on permaculture and sustainable living. Afterward, have an open discussion about the content, sharing your thoughts, questions, and aspirations for a more sustainable future. This informal setting can spark meaningful conversations and encourage others to consider incorporating sustainable practices in their lives.
5. Share the Knowledge
Knowledge thrives on sharing! After attending workshops, open gardens, or participating in other Permaculture Week events, share your experiences and insights on social media using the hashtag #PermacultureWeek2024. This helps spread awareness, inspire others to get involved, and create a community of learning and support.

Remember…
No matter how you choose to celebrate Permaculture Week, the key is to embrace the learning spirit and engage with your community. Sharing the knowledge with others creates a ripple effect, gradually fostering a more sustainable future, one permaculture practice at a time.
